Arrested In Connection With Journalist's Murder In Tripura

Superintendent of Police of West district, Abhijit Saptarshi said Santanu Bhowmick, a journalist from Dinrat news channel, was covering the agitation and road blockade by the IPFT at Mandai when he was hit from behind and abducted. The Tripura government has ordered an inquiry into the incident and four members belonging to the IPFT have been arrested by the police in connection with the case. For many years, IPFT has been fighting for a separate state for indigenous Tripuris, which the ruling Left Front has always opposed. There is no solution to the murder of Kannada journalist Gauri Lankesh. While Tripura has seen quite a few clashes and political violence in the recent days, the murder of Bhowmik proves that even journalists with no political affiliation who are merely reporting on the happenings are not safe in India.

A total number of close to 30 journalists have been reportedly killed across the North East in last 12 years, thereby, making it one of the most risky places for media in the country.

The party demanded that the culprits be brought to book immediately. The government, on the other hand, suspended internet connectivity for 24 hours.

Jayanta Bhattacharya, a senior journalist, said Bhowmik's death underscored the perils of reporting in a communally-charged atmosphere.

Journalists in large numbers are holding protest outside Tripura chief minister's residence after the murder of the journalist.

The Russian military acknowledged Tuesday the video was genuine, but denied it happened Monday. This is actually not the first mistake the Russians have made during their military exercises.

Pranab Sarkar, secretary of the Tripura Journalists' Union, said, "Bhowmik was assaulted in front of police personnel, who remained mute spectators".

Prior to Gauri, Haryana-based television journalist Surender Singh Rana was shot dead on July 29.

The AMWJU President then recalled how journalists were also killed in Manipur.

"With 32 journalists killed since 1987, Assam has been one of the most risky places in India for journalists".
