Liliane Bettencourt was the heiress to the L'Oréal fortune. "We would remain committed to the L'Oreal group and back the leadership of Jean-Paul Agon", she was reported as saying.

French tycoon Liliane Bettencourt, the world's richest woman, sat atop the L'Oreal empire and ran a philanthropic foundation, but faced a hard old age clouded by dementia and legal drama.

Bettencourt, listed by Bloomberg's Billionaires Index as the fifteenth richest person in the world with a total net worth of $42.5, and the world's richest woman, passed away on Wednesday, her family said.

L'Oreal legend has it that Ms Bettencourt was not much loved by her mother, and certainly she was less than enamoured with her own offspring towards the end of her life.
