Many people he said would often call into their workplace saying they had a really bad flu or stomach ache and would be unable to make it in while many people with mental health illnesses often reported in ill, calling their mental illness something else.

With no physical signs in most cases, the agonising day-to-day impact mental health problems can have on people's lives can nearly be forgotten by the rest of the world.

A dedicated telephone helpline for EMCOR UK employees has been introduced alongside the recruitment of EMCOR UK Mind Champions and trained mental health staff to lead the programme and host a series of EMCOR UK Mind Days across the UK.

World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 every year and this year's theme is mental health in the workplace.

It's getting better, but mental health seems to still be a topic that borders on the line of taboo.

From a human resources perspective, mental health days are beneficial for everyone involved.
