Cher cast in 'Mamma Mia' sequel alongside Meryl Streep

Cher will join returning cast members Meryl Streep, Julia Walters, Christine Baranski, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Pierce Bronsan, Stellan Skarsgård and Colin Firth.

The queen of reinvention is making her return to the silver screen.

Lily James is also in the film as the younger version of Donna, Streep's character.

Cher has revealed that she will appear in the sequel to Mamma Mia.

The original movie's soundtrack, itself an adaptation of the stage musical, was built around songs recorded and performed by ABBA in the mid-to-late 1970s and early 1980s; its title references 1975 single Mamma Mia.

CNN has reached out to Universal Pictures to confirm Cher's role in the sequel. Although Cher is said to have a large part connected to the main plot, her role is now being kept under wraps, but we can presumably expect some big hair to be involved though.

A mysterious tweet, which says "Fernando" in all caps, could offer fans insight about what to expect-perhaps Cher will perform Abba's 1980 single off Gracias Por La Música?

Cher won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Moonstruck in 1987.
