Bergdahl sentencing hearing delayed

Bergdahl sentencing hearing delayed

Bergdahl faces a maximum sentence of life in prison after pleading guilty last week to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.

Bergdahl's defense team argued that their client could not get a fair shake from the court because Trump, during a Rose Garden appearance on October 16, at first said he couldn't talk about the case and then added: "But I think people have heard my comments in the past".

Bergdahl was at the center of an worldwide controversy when he was freed from captivity by the Taliban after five years, during which he suffered extreme torture, in exchange for five Guantanmo Bay detainees.

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl might be back home, but he's still facing the weight of a possible life sentence.

Bergdahl's story has left the nation debating for eight years about whether he is a hero or traitor, as well as the importance of the long held American commitment not to leave troops behind.

In the motion last week, Bergdahl's attorneys argued that the brief comment from President Trump the day before shows the president still believes the disparaging comments he made on the campaign trail.

Why is Bergdahl on trial?

Only hours before his capture had he deserted his post in Afghanistan. His disappearance launched a massive search operation. The negotiations which led to Bergdahl's release were orchestrated under the Obama administration and have since been the subject of both criticism and celebration. The U.S. does not "leave our men or women in uniform behind", Obama said, regardless of how Bergdahl came to be captured.

Despite their popularity, however, Facebook has struggled to monetize its messaging services like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. At the moment, the peer-to-peer payments system is only available in the US , where PayPal has over 2.5 million customers.

During a hearing last week, Bergdahl told the judge, Army Col. Jeffery R. Nance, that he was trying to reach the base from where he was dispatched. He replied that he couldn't say anything more about the case, "but I think people have heard my comments in the past".

In 2015, an Army Sanity Board evaluation said Bergdahl had schizotypal personality disorder.

Three years ago it became a media frenzy as the Army rescued a prisoner of war who spent five years in captivity after leaving his post. And depending on the outcome of his sentencing hearing, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars. He entered a "naked plea", meaning he does not have an agreement about the sentencing terms with prosecutors.

Upon conversing to various soldiers encompassing, a former Army lawyer, in preliminary hearing about how they'd penalize Bergdahl. Local Taliban held him hostage, and he didn't get freed until a controversial prisoner exchange in 2014.

"At least the Taliban were honest enough to say, "I'm the guy who's gonna cut your throat, '" Bergdahl, 31, tells British TV journalist Sean Langan in an exclusive interview with the Sunday Times Magazine titled 'The Homecoming from Hell".

Bergdahl elected to be tried by a judge, not a panel of military officers, in August.
