Jeff Seyler, executive vice president of the American Lung Association's Northeast region, said the new state law will protect the public's health and help shield children from the "dangerous and often lifetime addiction to nicotine".

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and vaping are being banned in bars, restaurants and most workplaces in the U.S. state of NY under a new law that takes effect in 30 days.

The bill is the latest passed by the State Legislature to combat the rise in e-cigarette and vaping by youths and in public places including bars, said Senate Health Committee Chairman Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City). New York City's ban has been in place since 2013, when Michael R. Bloomberg, then the mayor, included it in the city's Smoke Free Air Act.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed a bill into law banning the use of e-cigarettes in public places. NY created the act in 2003, making it one of the country's first states to ban smoking tobacco products in public indoor areas.

One of the big concerns is the popularity of e-cigarettes among young people.

It has already raised concerns that NY lawmakers are blowing smoke over the wrong products.

Bayer said he thinks lawmakers don't understand the difference between e-cigarettes and traditional smokes, and are "responding in uncertainty". "I am pleased that the governor signed this bill into law, and look forward to continuing to work with the administration to enhance New York's tobacco control measures".

In July, Cuomo banned the use of e-cigarettes on the grounds of all state schools.

But proponents of vaping argue that e-cigs are a safer alternative to cigarettes. Alexandra Miller said people should not vape or smoke indoors.

Singh, who indicated that he believes the new law is unnecessary, said the products he sells may be a health risk but are the lesser of two evils.
