Legalizing Marijuana Has Strong Support From Republicans For The First Time Ever

According to Forbes, around two out of three Americans say they support legalizing marijuana.

A new Gallup poll marks a first for marijuana - a majority of Republicans now support legalizing the drug.

The poll also showed a majority of Republicans favoring legalization for the first time, with 51 percent expressing support.

When Gallup first posed the marijuana legalization question in October 1969, only 12 percent of respondents were in favor.

In late November 2012, following the states of Colorado and Washington voting to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, the Gallup marijuana poll showed support of legalization at 48 percent.

Support for marijuana legalization has been rising steadily over the years so it's not all that surprising to some that numbers have reached this level. In 2009, Democrats were the first partisan group to see majority support for legalization, followed by independents in 2010. Many other states allow marijuana use for medicinal purposes under laws with varying degrees of strictness.

Marijuana remains illegal under federal law, but the drug has been legalized by eight states and the District of Columbia. Despite 72 percent of Democrats supporting legalization, Senator Cory Booker's bill to make weed legal nationwide has drawn a grand total of zero co-sponsors.

Of course, we're all ignoring the more interesting point here - that, between 2016 and 2017, Republicans polled by Gallup on legalizing marijuana jumped "up nine percentage points". But if more and more Republican voters begin to support pro-marijuana candidates during the primaries, they could begin to shift marijuana policies throughout the United States. "Over the past several years, Gallup has found that Americans have become more liberal on a variety of social issues". While it's true that this increase in support for legalization has not led to the same rapid changes in the law we saw when it came to marriage equality, much of that can be attributed to the differences in how those laws can be changed. "Rank-and-file Republicans' views on the issue have evolved just as Democrats' and independents' have". Sessions has repeatedly criticized marijuana legalization, according to Forbes.
