England can't ignore a fit Wilshere: Wenger

Wilshere's Premier League absence was brought into sharper focus by Gareth Southgate's decision to omit him from his latest squad to face Germany and Brazil later this month.

England announced the squad on their official Twitter account on Thursday afternoon, selecting four uncapped players in Joe Gomez, Tammy Abraham, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jordan Pickford.

Southgate said: "I don't know how you get in an England squad without getting in the Arsenal team".

The 47-year-old told reporters: "He looks to play forward when he can, he has a good range of passing, is able to receive and change the direction of play, but it has been his composure which has really stood out". The other guys I want to see and want to look at and that's an important part of how we want to play, building from there.

"That's probably the toughest call I've had to make because of the team that Chris is playing for and the fact he's playing and keeping clean sheets". On that, Southgate said: 'I have huge respect for Chris.

This new phase is about helping England to play the type of football Southgate has always wanted to see.

One of those defenders is Gomez, who has been predominantly used at full-back for Liverpool, but whom Southgate believes could fit well into a back three.

"For him, it is just about game time". A back-three is ideal for him, he's quick, athletic and can use the ball.

Harry Winks keeps his place alongside five Tottenham team-mates: Rose, Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier and Eric Dier. "I think [Smalling] can", Southgate insisted. "I don't think anybody can sit and safely think they're going to be involved next summer".
