MSP building of Scottish Parliament evacuated following suspect package find

Police and firefighters were called to the scene, but business elsewhere in the parliament continued as normal.

"The MSP block was evacuated as a precaution but enquiries have concluded there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding this incident and no crime has been committed".

Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston was caught up in a security alert at Holyrood.

A Conservative source told the Evening News that the packages received were invitations to the Inverness Courier newspaper's 200th anniversary celebration event.

Halcro-Johnston opened one of the envelopes, which contained white powder, reports say.

Emergency crew and police rushed to Holyrood in Edinburgh after the packages were discovered at around 11:30am this morning.

A spokesman for the parliament confirmed: "The incident involved the discovery of suspicious packages in the MSP building".

Firefighters and police officers are now on the scene in Edinburgh, while MSPs have gathered in a lobby area of the parliament.

"Our incident management team in consultation with the emergency services are reviewing whether further measures are necessary".

Offices at Scotland's devolved parliament in Edinburgh were briefly evacuated on Tuesday after suspicious packages containing white powder were found. The MSP block is now closed.

'This is part of a pre-arranged process put in place, ready to deal with such developing situations'.

"As a precaution the MSP building was evacuated".

A Scottish Parliament spokesman thanked "building users for their patience and co-operation".
