Charlotte FAA Worker Received Homemade Pipe Bomb From Roommate, Police Say

An air traffic controller accused of possessing a weapon of mass destruction has lost his airport access and could lose his freedom as well. Dandan was charged with one count each of possession of a weapon of mass destruction, acquiring a weapon of mass destruction and transport of a weapon of mass destruction.

Thirty-year-old Paul George Dandan is now being held in the Mecklenburg County Jail under a US$45,000 bond, NBC affiliate WCNC reported.

Dandan got the bomb from his room mate, a 39-year-old identified as Derrick Fells, media reported.

A North Carolina air traffic controller was one of two suspects arrested after being found in possession of a homemade pipe bomb.

A roommate of Dandan's was also arrested in relation to having bomb-making materials, which were also not at the airport.

At the time, I said to myself that what I did was okay because I never showed a woman my d-- without asking first, which is also true.

Police said it was found at Dandan's apartment.

A representative with the Federal Aviation Administration noted that Dandan's airport access credentials were revoked following his arrest. Authorities say his airport access only extended to the control tower. Online records show that Derrick Fells is facing three weapons offense charges as well as a charge for possession of a weapon of mass destruction. The Observer report says that officials do not think that Dandan will face federal charges.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department received a 911 call on November 3 from a person reporting a homemade explosive, law enforcement said Friday. He admitted to building the bomb with the intent to use it against a neighbor he had been fighting with, but that he then changed his mind and gave it away instead.

The FAA confirmed to NBC Charlotte that Dandan's access to the airport was terminated following his arrest Friday afternoon.

Dandan was also charged back in 2015 for assaulting a woman, according to the newspaper.
