Twitter Verified Charlottesville White Nationalist Jason Kessler and People Are Freaking Out

Earlier this week, Twitter bestowed its blue verification checkmark on Kessler, who, among other disreputable credits, organized the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, VA, in August.

"Verification was meant to authenticate identity & voice but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance", Twitter support said.

Less than a day after Twitter came under fire for bestowing a coveted blue checkmark on white nationalist Jason Kessler, it has made a decision to appease angry users by suspending its verification program all together.

Kessler has used his account to spread white supremacist propaganda and, following the Charlottesville rally, a tweet was sent from his account branding Heyer a "fat, disgusting Communist" and saying her death was "payback time".

On Tuesday 7 November, Twitter unleashed a barrage of complaints after it verified the account of Jason Kessler, indicating his prominence in the public sphere. "We have paused all general verifications while we work and will report back soon". Seems like the kind of person Twitter would not want to amplify, but alas no. They also appear more likely to show up in Google search's Twitter bar, which populates at the top of search results for important news events.

Solo accuses ex-FIFA president Blatter of sexual assault
In the case of Sepp Blatter, I went on the stage, I was nervous for the presentation. It was the Ballon D'Or I was presenting. Solo has taken to social media to praise those who have spoken out against sexual harassment using the hashtag #MeToo.

"Go ahead, add that middle name or even a few more emojis", said Twitter, which has been attracting a great deal of criticism of late.

Do U think this blue check is warranted??

"We should've communicated faster on this (yesterday): our agents have been following our verification policy correctly, but we realized some time ago the system is broken and needs to be reconsidered", he wrote.

But Twitter's verification system has also become a status symbol over the years, in part because the group of verified users on Twitter is a very small portion of the overall user base.

Strictly speaking, Twitter verification is not an endorsement of views.
