3 killed in shooting that ends at California elementary school, official says

At least three people have died and a number of primary school students have been wounded after a string of shootings in northern California.

Authorities received 911 calls of shooting at multiple sites, including the Rancho Tehama Elementary School, Tuesday morning, Assistant Tehama County Sheriff Phil Johnston said.

"I am told the suspected shooter is deceased from law enforcement bullets".

The shooter had a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns.

Area resident Brian Flint told local media that his roommate had been shot and killed by the gunman, a former convict in his 50s.

"The insane thing is that the neighbour has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines", Mr Flint said.

Hate Crimes Rise For The Second Consecutive Year
Of the departments that recorded a hate crime, the majority- 25 incidents, or 64 percent - occurred in Cobb County. Crimes motivated by bias against Protestants and Eastern Orthodox Christians both declined.

A number of students are reported to have been hurt at a primary school in Rancho Tehama Reserve, about 130 miles north of Sacramento.

There are at least five scenes in and around the school that police are investigating. "This guy has been insane, and he's been threatening us and everything".

Some students were transported to hospitals by helicopter, and others were moved to safe locations, the assistant sheriff's said. A woman and another child were shot in a truck that was driving near the school and taken to the hospital, he added. Johnston said the school had been cleared by 10 a.m. but he did not have any information about the victims there. The FBI also "is sending some teams up to assist at the request of Tehama County authorities", said Jason Wandel, chief division counsel at the FBI's Sacramento field office.

The shooting began at a home near the elementary school.

The roommates lived close to the gunman, and he said that the gunman was firing off rounds.
