Saudi-led coalition promises to ease blockade on Yemen

Saudi-led coalition promises to ease blockade on Yemen

In a statement, coalition officials said that it would reopen the ports and airport to receive "urgent humanitarian and relief materials" starting midday on Thursday (0900 UTC).

The coalition had closed all air, land and sea access to Yemen earlier this month following the launch of a missile fired toward the Saudi capital.

He says that "at a time of starvation and a time of cholera, it's very important" to keep all aid channels open.

The Houthi government on Tuesday announced the country's main global airport was fully functional again a week after a Saudi-led airstrike destroyed the facility's navigation system.

The move comes amid mounting calls from worldwide aid groups, warning that mass starvation and lack of medication is going to soon be killing thousands of civilians daily in Yemen.

About 7 million people face starvation in Yemen and their survival is dependent on worldwide assistance.

United Nations officials say Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the Middle East, is facing the world's worst cholera outbreak, near starvation conditions in some parts and a severe breakdown of the healthcare system.

Aid group Save the Children welcomed the coalition's announcement but warned that it was "nowhere near enough to avert a potential starvation in Yemen".

"It is good news", said Jamie McGoldrick, the United Nations humanitarian chief for Yemen. The missile was struck down but it was the farthest a projectile by the rebels, also known as Houthis, had penetrated into the kingdom. The two ports have served as the only lifeline for northern Yemen, where most of the country's 27 million people live.

In 2015, Saudi Arabia and its allies joined the Yemeni government's fight against the rebels.

Airstrikes and ground fighting have left more than 10,000 people dead and driven 3 million from their homes since the coalition intervened in the war between forces loyal to President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi and the Houthi rebels.

Nearly 9,000 people have since been killed, but millions face the risk of a deadly cholera epidemic and stand on the brink of starvation.
