Israel Targets Iranian Military Base SW of Damascus

Two of the surface-to-surface missiles launched were intercepted by Syrian air defense, but others caused material damage to the military site, sources told SANA.

Syrian state TV reports that the attack caused damage but two missiles were intercepted.

This follows a row of seemingly random attacks on Syria by the hostile Israeli Defense Forces, which often target positions near the Golan Heights but have since expanded their operating territory to attack more high-value targets. Details of the attack are still unclear, as the first reports were in the Israeli media, and within a matter of hours were removed. A recent report in a Kuwaiti newspaper included a statement from Israeli officials who said that the government had vowed to destroy any Iranian positions within 40 km of the northern border with Syria. Iran has not commented on the incident.

Israel has grown deeply alarmed by Iran's expanding clout during the conflict, and has warned it would act against any threat from its regional foe Tehran.

Iran and Lebanon's Hizballah movement are allied with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Iran-backed Shiite militias, including Hezbollah, have helped Damascus regain control of swathes of the country.

Indeed, BBC itself used ambiguous language in saying the satellite images "seem to show" construction activity at the site referenced by the intelligence source between January and October this year. But the Prime Minister's Office saw fit to put out the short clip relating to Iranian presence in Syria on Saturday evening.
