Code.org raises $12M to help more kids learn computer science

Students around the world are practicing their computer skills.

More than 70 school districts agreed to expand computer-science education in some way, Code.org said.

And as a father, I know that encouraging innovation doesn't just mean my boys are spending their afternoons playing on tablets or smartphones.

Computer science drives innovation through the United States economy, but it remains marginalized throughout K-12 education.

"While significant work remains ahead, today's pledges, dedication, and support reflect unprecedented global momentum behind the vision that every student in every school deserves the opportunity to learn computer science", Code.org founder Hadi Partovi said in a statement.

Voyager 1 Thrusters Fires Up First Time Since 1980
And even after Voyager 1 dies - or if we lose contact with it - the spacecraft is ready to achieve great things. The thrusters are used to orient itself so it is capable of continuing to send back communications to Earth.

When Code.org started four years ago, it couldn't get a single school district to commit to teaching computer science in every high school.

This growing interest in computer science is excellent news for economies across the region which are gearing up to compete in the fourth industrial revolution, an economic landscape which will be dominated by digital technologies, robotics, artificial intelligence and next-generation transportation. Computer science can help nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. Meanwhile, the state of Arkansas announced that it will be dedicating $500,000 to the creation of a first-of-its-kind stipend program for existing K-8 teachers in the state who are interested in receiving training to teach computer science.

In 2013, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that there will be 1.4 million computer science-related jobs available in the U.S.by 2020 and only 400,000 graduates with computer science skills. The hour is an introduction to computer science to show the girls that anyone can learn the basics. "Using Itelitek's CoderZ software platform, we built 50 virtual coding challenges that allow students to navigate robots through increasingly hard challenges". "When students use technology to create something of their own design by coding, it builds both technical skill and confidence - both of which are critical for success in the future".

Brooklyn schools will play a big part in the Hack League, thanks to Borough President Eric Adams' Code Brooklyn initiative, launched in 2015. Amazon, Microsoft, and Facebook have donated more than $10 million each to Code.org since its inception.
