GM puts an e-commerce marketplace in the dashboard

Marketplace will serve as the automotive industry's first-ever in-car on-demand platform as it will allow drivers to make reservations and order from places like Starbucks while on the go. Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, and Applebee's will allow drivers to order food and drink ahead of pickup; Shell will provide drivers the closest fuel station and soon let them pay for their fuel from the vehicle; Priceline will provide hotel and airfare information; and TGI Fridays will let a driver reserve a table.

Drivers can also purchase more data for in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspots, discounts on oil changes or deals on GM accessories in the "Shop" section of the application.

What's more, although the Marketplace is able to be used while driving, GM reportedly designed the system's interface ensuring customers don't have to take their eyes off the road for a prolonged period of time.

GM's service - which is made for use while driving - is initially limited to about a dozen vendors but the automaker wants to add other brands and capabilities as it expands the service.

The Saudi-led coalition launched an air campaign against the rebels in March 2015 and later expanded into ground operations. Yemen has been decimated by almost three years of fighting and a Saudi-led bombing campaign backed by the United States.

"Leveraging connectivity and our unique data capabilities, we have an opportunity to make every trip more productive and give our customers time back", Santiago Chamorro, GM's vice president for Global Connected Customer Experience, said Tuesday in a news advisory.

"For most retailers and consumer brands the daily commute is the only time not accessible in a consumers' day", said Chamorro. Many cars come equipped with music apps such as Pandora or reservation apps like OpenTable, both of which let drivers poke through digital lists.

"When you use your phone, you get access to the entire menu of Starbucks so you have hundreds of possibilities of beverages and food and temperatures".

The whole "ordering while driving" thing didn't go over well with the National Safety Council, a nonprofit organization that says it tries to achieve its mission by helping keep businesses, elected officials and government agencies from making decisions that would cause "preventable injuries". "Just click, click and you're done". Auto owners don't need a vehicle data plan to use Marketplace and GM says the system adheres to distracted driving guidelines. An estimated 4 million GM cars to be connected to the commerce platform in the next 12 to 18 months. "We know customers will appreciate the opportunity to connect and interact with their favorite brands from the vehicle, in a safer and more convenient way". Applebee's, Dunkin' Donuts and Wingstop can handle takeout orders, and Starbucks will be available early next year.
