Mueller Details $3M Spent On Early Months Of Russia Probe

An additional $3.5 million was paid out by the Justice Department to support the investigation, though the special counsel's office says that money would have been spent on ongoing probes anyway, even if Mueller had not been appointed. "The investigation would surely continue, though perhaps with someone who doesn't think his job includes protecting the FBI and Mr. (James) Comey from answering questions about their role in the 2016 election".

As special counsel Mr Mueller, who headed the Federal Bureau of Investigation for more than a decade, has the powers to subpoena records and bring criminal charges. No subpoena has been issued or received. It was the first time Mr. Trump had said anything other than Mr. Flynn was sacked for lying to Mr. Pence. A spokesman for Mueller declined to comment.

CNN Congressional Correspondent Manu Raju tweeted that Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee actually blocked the Trump finances subpoena, refusing to order Deutsche Bank to hand over the Trump Organization's financial records.

Deutsche Bank has previously rejected similar demands, citing privacy laws. Trump has denied any wrongdoing. They certainly have the power to do so, should Mueller deem it necessary: The order establishing the investigation authorizes him to pursue "any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump", as well as "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation".

Mueller incorporated several active investigations within the Justice Department including those of Trump campaign contacts with Russian Federation, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's business activities and former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Handelsblatt reported that the subpoena arrived "a few weeks ago", and that the most important files relevant to the request have already been sent to Mueller's team.

The bank said additionally in a statement that "Deutsche Bank takes its legal obligations seriously and remains committed to cooperating with authorized investigation into this matter".

But until Mueller opts to bring his investigation into the public eye, we're unlikely to know for sure whether he's chose to cast his net so broadly. In July, he told the New York Times such an action would amount to crossing a red line.

Democratic senators, including Dianne Feinstein, suggested after the Flynn plea that Mueller might be building an obstruction of justice case against Trump. In particular, Trump hailed the news that one of Mueller's aides had been removed from his job over the summer for some anti-Trump text messages.

Many media outlets included the denial from Trump's attorney in their reports, but the idea of his bank being subpoenaed for his financial records makes for far juicier headlines.
