Saudi blockade on Yemen must be lifted 'for humanitarian reasons immediately'

Yemeni women held rare protests in Sanaa on Wednesday, demanding that the capital's rebel authorities hand over the body of slain ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The Saudi-led coalition battling the rebels had thrown its support behind Saleh just hours before his death, as the longtime strongman's alliance with the rebels unraveled.

RSF's sources said the journalists were forced to surrender the TV channel's access codes, enabling the Houthis to broadcast their own content.

Saleh, who ruled Yemen with an iron fist for three decades until 2012, had joined forces with the Shiite Huthi rebels three years ago when they took control of large parts of the Arabian Peninsula country including the capital Sanaa.

A video provided to AFP by the rebels showed what appeared to be a dead Saleh with a severe head injury, his body wrapped in a floral-print blanket.

ANALYSTS and commentators have rightly pointed out that killing of Ali Abdullah Saleh, the former Yemeni president, removes the country's most important political figure for four decades from a complex equation that has plunged the Arab world's poorest nation into conflict and sparked the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Mohamed Ali al-Houthi, a rebel leader, said Tuesday that "some sons" of Saleh have been hospitalized, without providing further details. The Houthis' top leader, Abdul-Malek al-Houthi, said Saleh paid the price for his "treason", accusing him of betraying their alliance to side with the Saudi-led coalition.

Saleh's son, Ahmed, has reportedly been under house arrest in the United Arab Emirates, a key member of the coalition.

Saudi Arabia continues to bomb Yemen's Sana'a despite calls for humanitarian ceasefire: UN

Strongman Saleh had on Saturday bypassed his Houthi allies of three years, telling the Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen he was ready to negotiate if the crippling siege could be lifted.

In other areas like Fag Attan, Saleh's forces are still surrounded by Houthis.

But with Saleh's forces seemingly in disarray, it was not immediately clear if the Saudi-led coalition would be able to turn the split to its advantage.

The war and blockade has plunged Yemen into a major humanitarian disaster, leaving 20 million people in need of aid.

The analyst also warned that if Arabs do not unite, it will not be unusual to soon witness the effects of Iranian intervention, such as the emerging of sectarian conflicts, ethnic wars, and total destruction in other Arab countries.

The fighting has claimed more than 10,000 lives since then.

"They obviously care about US support", Corker said.

At least 234 people have been killed and 400 wounded in five days of heavy fighting in the Yemeni capital, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
