Australia legalizes marriage equality in historic vote

The Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) bill, which, if passed, will formally change the Marriage Act to legalise same-sex marriage, is now progressing through the House of Representatives with a vote expected today.

In the 150-seat parliament there were only four No votes, three from the ruling Liberal-National coalition and one Independent.

The Senate has already passed the bill without amendments and the House of Representatives is expected to do the same later today.

Additionally, the passing of the same-sex marriage law will be a strategic political win for Turnbull, who has been strongly opposed by his predecessor Tony Abbott, a staunch supporter of conventional marriage.

WE'RE on the final lap of Australia's protracted journey towards same-sex marriage. The Senate had passed the same legislation last week. "Australia has done it", said Mr Turnbull just before the parliamentary vote.

This is by no means the end of the fight for LGBTQIA rights in Australia, but it's one of the biggest leaps forward we've seen in our lifetime.

Pope Urges Trump Not To Recognize Jerusalem As Israel's Capital
"I can not remain silent about my deep concern for the situation that has been created in the last days". Mr Abbas is also understood to have called Pope Francis to express his concerns about the move.

"We've voted today for equality, for love, it's time for more marriages, more commitment, more love, more respect", he continued.

Lawmakers approved the bill less than a month after the Australian Bureau of Statistics announced the majority of voters who took part in a non-binding plebiscite on whether gays and lesbians should be able to legally in the country said "yes".

In June, the United Nations Human Rights Committee said Australia's transgender "forced divorce" laws were in violation of worldwide human rights law.

Last month, we found out that the citizens voted in favor of legalizing gay marriage, but that was only a poll to find out what the people wanted. "When people came together and made the case for change, and the beauty of this outcome is that everybody owns the result".

"The Australian people were promised that their freedom of speech, freedom of religion and parental rights would be protected in any same-sex marriage legislation, and this has not happened", he said.
