Singapore Airlines reroutes flights over North Korean missile threat

As a safety precaution in response to North Korea's unpredictable missile launches, Singapore's flagship airline made the very apt decision to change its flight routes that could potentially pass over the test areas.

The North Korean missile was sacked very high up, reaching an altitude of 4,475 kilometers (2,780 miles) before falling back into the Sea of Japan about 950 kilometers (600 miles) from where it was launched.

Singapore Airlines has changed the travel routes of some of their flights travelling over the troubled Korean peninsula.

In a leaked internal memo, the airline's general manager for operations, Mark Hoey, told the staff, "Today [date unspecified] the crew of CX893 reported, 'Be advised, we witnessed the DPRK missile blow up and fall apart near our current location.'" The Democratic People's Republic of Korea or DPRK, is the official name for North Korea.

An airline spokesperson told CNNMoney on Wednesday that it had rerouted daily flights between the South Korean capital, Seoul, and Los Angeles after Pyongyang test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in July.

Nothing sweet in weather forecast as Met √Čireann issues Storm Caroline warning
Transport networks face widespread disruption and power cuts are possible as a result of the extreme weather, the forecaster said. A North Sea platform shut down production due to safety fears over weather conditions caused by Storm Caroline.

Korean Air said the pilots on two of its flights bound for Seoul "saw a flash and everyone is assuming it should be the missile because of the timing".

Described by Pyongyang as its "most powerful" missile, the 29 November launch ended up in Japanese waters but flew higher than any other the North had previously tested.

"There are no current routes that fly through a unsafe zone", said an Asiana Airlines official.

According to guidelines issued by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), a UN agency in charge of air safety, nations have the "responsibility to issue risk advisories regarding any threats to the safety of civilian aircraft operating in their airspace".

Federal regulation from 1997 prohibits all USA airlines from flying over the Flight Information Region of Pyongyang.
