Ryanair to Recognize Pilot Unions to Avert Christmas Strike

Speaking to the Sunday Independent, a senior union source insisted the get-together between both sides would have to be before the Wednesday deadline.

Investors in Ryanair have questioned if Michael O'Leary's reign is coming to an end after he yesterday offered to recognise unions for the first time in the company's 32-year history.

According to the German pilots' union, Ryanair offers no continued payment of wages in the event of sickness, no obligatory work schedule, no retirement planning and a widely prevalent system of pseudo-self-employed pilots.

The IMPACT trade union responded that "an immediate meeting, between management and the union, is now necessary to clarify issues and make progress".

The airline's chief operations officer, Peter Bellew, confirmed the planned meetings in a social media post on Saturday, saying "let's keep talking".

A spokesman added: "Once we meet, we can take a decision on deferring industrial action".

The Upper House was adjourned till 2.30 p.m. soon after it met for the Question Hour after a short adjournment. I hope for positive and innovative arguments.

Mr Harbor said IMPACT had spoken to senior Ryanair management, telling them they were ready to meet them at any time.

The airline was also facing action by pilots in Italy, Germany and Portugal.

Europe's largest low-priced carrier offered on Friday to recognise pilot unions for the first time in its 32-year history in a last-minute attempt to avert its first-ever pilot strike at the start of the holiday season.

In Spain, there are no strikes planned for pilots but ground staff unions have not ruled out action on 30 December.

About 117 Ireland-based pilots had threatened to walk out on Wednesday delivering flight chaos and scuppering passengers' plans for the festive season.
