Queen's message to reflect on 'appalling' terror attacks

The Queen, 91, began her message by referring to the technological changes that have happened since her first televised Christmas broadcast 60 years ago in 1957.

"We remember the birth of Jesus Christ whose only sanctuary was a stable in Bethlehem", she said.

Footage was shown of the Queen meeting teenage survivors of the suicide bombing which killed 22 people when an attacker detonated an explosive device as fans left a Manchester Arena concert by United States singer Ariana Grande.

She then referred to London and Manchester, saying their powerful identities shone through in the past 12 months in the face of appalling attacks.

Her message's main theme was the importance of home.

"I describe that hospital visit as a privilege because the patients I met were an example to us all, showing extraordinary bravery and resilience".

Elizabeth also says in her brief broadcast that the royal family looks forward "to welcoming new members into it next year".

In March, a terrorist plowed his vehicle into pedestrians on London's Westminster Bridge, killing four people, before stabbing a police officer to death outside Parliament.

United Nations adopts tough new sanctions on North Korea
The newest proposed sanctions would also ban North Koreans from working overseas and toughen rules on shipping. And it caps imports of refined oil products, including diesel and kerosene, at 500,000 barrels a year.

"We think of our homes as places of warmth, familiarity and love".

The address was filmed in Buckingham Palace's 1844 room that is decorated with a Christmas tree and pictures of her husband as well as great grandchildren George and Charlotte.

The royal couple are featured in a black and white image from their 1947 wedding, and in a colour photo released to mark their 70th wedding anniversary celebrated in November.

She also commended the country's emergency services, which have endured a hard year with a series of terror attacks in London.

And she hinted at the arrival of new family members, with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry planning to marry in May, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge expecting their third child in April.

Markle, who was shown briefly in the program's closing images, attended a Christmas carol service with the royal family on Monday at a church near the queen's Sandringham estate, in Norfolk, England.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have joined members of the Royal Family for the Morning Service on Christmas Day in Sandringham.

The Queen writes her own Christmas message without seeking government advice.
