Israel plans to name East Jerusalem train station after Donald Trump

But dedicating the rail station to Trump is a way of thanking him for what he did earlier in December, when he recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and said he intends to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Trump's "blackmail" had little effectiveness - 128 countries voted against the controversial decision, and 35 abstained.

Israel's transportation minister is pushing ahead with a plan to dig a railway tunnel under Jerusalem's Old City, passing near sites holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims - and ending at the Western Wall with a station named after President Donald Trump.

"There has been no recent discussion, whether among relevant government agencies, or bilaterally with Israel or with any other country, on the location of the Philippine Embassy in Israel", DFA said in a statement. The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, and a longstanding worldwide consensus holds that the fate of the city should be decided through direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. He proposed naming the future station after Trump "for his courageous and historic decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital" earlier this month.

A council resolution in the coastal city of Ashkelon would name a road "Trump Declaration Street", echoing the title of the "Balfour Declaration" of 1917, in which the British government committed to a Jewish home in British-mandatory Palestine. "We have asked nothing of Israel nor the United States".

In an exclusive interview with CNN a day after the General Assembly vote, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "I think what it does is finally recognize a historical truth".

Last week, the Trump Administration threatened to withdraw United States financial aid to all those countries that voted against its decision to consider Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in an extraordinary assembly convened by the UN in NY.

Transportation Ministry spokesman Avner Ovadia said Wednesday the project is estimated to cost more than $700 million and, if approved, would take four years to complete.

After this, the United Nations General Assembly had adopted by a decisive vote of 128 to 9, with 35 abstentions, a motion rejecting the U.S. decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Foreign embassies and most other diplomatic missions, including the U.S. Embassy, are based in Tel Aviv.

The Israeli army occupied Jerusalem in 1967. Giving the name of Trump to this project will not give it any legitimacy.

A longstanding worldwide consensus holds that the fate of the city should be decided through direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

It was the second time that the pope has spoken out publicly about Jerusalem since Trump's decision on Dec.6.
