Roy Moore Asks Alabama Court to Block Election's Certification

Jones will be sworn in to the Senate in January.

Moore filed a complaint in Montgomery County Circuit Court late Wednesday asking state officials to delay certification of the December 12 special election until they investigate "all the evidence of potential fraud", which he contends was widespread.

Jones said in a statement that he looked forward to going to work for the people of Alabama in the new year.

Senator-elect Doug Jones of Alabama says his victory marks a "new chapter for our state and the nation". "I will be an independent voice and work to find common ground with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get Washington back on track and fight to make our country a better place for all".

Jones won 49.97 percent of the vote compared to Moore's 48.34 percent, a margin of almost 22,000 votes out of 1.35 million cast, officials said - a record for a special election.

Moore lost the race to Jones by a margin of 1.5 percent - just under 21,000 votes.

He will takeover the seat previously held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Democrat Doug Jones was formally declared the victor of the bitterly contested US Senate race in the southern state of Alabama on Thursday, whittling down the Republican majority in the chamber by a crucial seat.

The state of Alabama on Thursday certified Democrat Doug Jones as the victor of this month's special Senate election after a judge denied Republican Roy Moore's effort to halt the process via a last-ditch lawsuit charging widespread voter fraud.

Sam Coleman, a spokesman for Jones's campaign, was not impressed by Moore's complaint.

"I have stood for the truth about God and the Constitution for the people of Alabama", he said.

Jones defeated Moore by about 20,000 votes. The complaint asked for a fraud investigation and eventually a new election.

Odd lost the Republican primary to former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore.

Jones, a former USA attorney, claimed victory over Moore earlier this month, after various allegations of sexual misconduct plagued the Republican hopeful's campaign.

Along with his lawsuit, Moore also submitted an affidavit claiming that he took a polygraph test "within days" of the special election. He said Moore's complaint seemed to boil down to the belief that he should have won based on exit polling and that the high turnout, including by African-American voters, must indicate fraud.

Rick Hasen, an election law expert and professor at the University of California, Irvine, said Moore's complaint did not raise the sort of issues that lead courts to overturn an election.

Moore repeatedly denied the allegations made against him.
