Delhi starts New Year with thick fog; flights, train services affected

With mercury at 5.7 degrees Celsius, dropping a notch below the season's average on Sunday night, hundreds of passengers braved the morning chill as they remained stranded for hours at the airport and Delhi railway stations.

All the terminals at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport were packed with passengers, who drove on fog-covered roads to catch their morning flights. So far there have been 4 cancellations, including three domestic and one global flight. This year's worst condition of fog has been experienced.

This is the second consecutive day that the Delhi airport witnessed fog-induced delays.

Departures require a visibility of at least 125 metres, while planes can land in visibility below 50 metres if the pilots are trained in CAT IIIB technology for low-visibility landings that allows qualified aircraft to land in visibility of 25-50 metres.

Irish manufacturing growth ends 2017 at record high
This is for the fifth consecutive month that the index has come in above 50-point mark that separates expansion from contraction. PMI for the high-tech sector picked up further to 53.8 in December from 53.2 in November, NBS data showed.

Yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 22.6 and 7.2 degrees Celsius respectively. This is also an improvement, as RVR was in the range of 50-100 metres in the last two days.

The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 21 degrees Celsius.

On January 1, 2018, the air pollution in the national capital stood on the brink of emergency level adding to the worsening fog condition. Low visibility also affected train services in the morning, with over 90 delayed, cancelled and re-scheduled due to the dense fog. The dense fog seems to create major problems for the visitors as the operations at the airport is severely affected.
