'Have heard IMA', says Nadda as doctors strike work

More than two lakh doctors are observing a nationwide strike called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Tuesday.

According to the striking doctors, they were observing the "black day" against the proposed bill allowing practitioners of alternative medicines, such as homoeopathy and ayurveda to practice allopathy after going through a "bridge course".

Terming the Bill as "anti-people and anti-patient", the association in a statement has stated that the Bill purported to eradicate corruption is "designed to open the floodgates of corruption". The IMA has called for a one-day strike against the bill today.

"To register our protest, routine medical services like OPD and elective surgeries across the country have been withdrawn between 6 am and 6 pm at our member hospitals and health institutions", national president Ravi Wankhede had told news agency IANS. The National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill has already been tabled in the Parliament on Friday and it seeks to replace the MCI.

Tandon also said: "The current MCI is a democratically elected body where we have almost 80 percent elected members and 20 percent nominated by the government". The doctor's strike has held against the new proposal of National Commission Bill.

Winter weather advisory extended
Arctic air stays in place all next week, with subzero wind chills every morning. Total ice accumulation expected is only a light glaze.

Addressing a press conference here, Dr. Parthiv Sanghvi of IMA, said, "The IMA is against the National Medical Commission because it is a government body where 90 percent members will be nominated by the government".

Shah said the provisions of the bill will make medical education in the country expensive.

There is also a strong resentment against the examination that will be conducted by the NMC for medical students after completion of the course to be eligible as practising doctors. The IMA has opposed the bill saying it will "cripple" medical professionals' functioning by making them answerable to the bureaucracy and non-medical administrators.

"In its present form, the Bills is detrimental to both the public and modern medicine in India".
