Trump slams FBI, Clinton for 'garbage' dossier

The cover letter does not say who the senators believe Steele lied to, but Grassley said in a statement about the referral that "everyone needs to follow the law and be truthful in their interactions with the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

The criminal referral is an escalation by Republicans struggling over the credibility of the dossier written by Steele about President Donald Trump and Russia -- and by extension the FBI and special counsel investigations into possible collusion between Russian officials and the Trump team.

Grassley and Graham are supporters of a campaign by President Trump and some Republicans to demonize Steele and his dossier and cast doubt over the credibility of official US investigations, including one led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

It claimed there was collusion between Mr Trump's presidential campaign and Russia, and that the Russians have information that could be used to blackmail the President.

"Remember, before the Senate - before the House Judiciary Committee, Congressmen Jim Jordan, Ron DeSantis, other people were asking, how was this funded?" said Chaffetz.

The dossier was unveiled to the public in early 2017. "Publicizing a criminal referral based on classified information raises serious questions about whether this letter is nothing more than another attempt to discredit government sources, in the midst of an ongoing criminal investigation". Flynn is now cooperating with the investigation.

The dossier was turned over to the FBI in 2016, and federal investigators worked to corroborate portions of it. However, CNN's reporting shows a number of pieces of intelligence separate from the dossier raised concerns among USA national security officials and propelled an investigation. The Guardian reported in April that foreign intelligence services, including Britain's GCHQ, were among the first to alert United States counterparts to contacts between Trump's campaign and Kremlin operatives.

It was revealed back in October that Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee that became the infamous dossier on Trump after the original Republican donor stopped funding it.

Even as new facts emerge and key officials have been indicted, including Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign chairman, the focus of some congressional committees has been fixed on Simpson, the former investigative reporter for the Wall Street Journal and co-founder of Fusion GPS.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Sen.

Instead of focusing on the Russian Federation claims, Simpson said, key Republicans have instead made him the focus of their investigations. Simpson has testified before three congressional committees - albeit behind closed doors - and has explained how his clients, the Washington Free Beacon and the Clinton campaign, came to hire Fusion GPS, setting off the private investigation into the Trump campaign.

Republicans have so far declined to release any of the transcripts of Simpson's interviews.

The DOJ, which appointed special counsel Robert Mueller to investigate alleged ties between Trump and Russian Federation in May 2017, is not obligated to follow Grassley and Graham's recommendation.

Simpson has been accused of having a hand in the meeting because of past and allegedly unrelated work that his firm did in connection to some of the Russians who attended the meeting. "We should all be sceptical in the extreme".
