'Fearless' astronaut John Young dies at 87

USA astronaut John Young, who flew to the moon twice and commanded the first ever space shuttle mission, has died aged 87, Nasa said.

John Watts Young was born September 24, 1930, in San Francisco to William Young and Wanda Howland Young.

On Apollo 10, in May 1969, NASA performed what it called "a full dress rehearsal" for landing men on the moon two months later. From there, he joined the US Navy, served aboard the USS LAWS during the Korean War, and went on to attend the Navy Test Pilot School.

"He is the astronaut's astronaut, a hero among heroes who fly in space". NASA announced earlier today that Young passed away at the age of 87 due to complications from pneumonia.

Astronaut Wally Schirra, who was not flying on the mission, bought the corned beef sandwich on rye bread from a delicatessen in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and asked Young to give it to Grissom in space.

From there, Young joined the Apollo program, where he was assigned to the Apollo 7 backup crew as the Command Module Pilot, along with astronauts Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan.

In 1981, Young commanded the inaugural flight of Nasa's first space shuttle, Columbia. Returning to Earth, they set a record still not equaled by a manned vehicle, going 32 times the speed of sound, or 24,816 miles per hour.

In April 1972, aboard Apollo 16, Young became the ninth member of the exclusive club of moon walkers. He flew to the moon twice and walked on its surface, according to NASA officials.

After his return to Earth, the shuttle would become Young's next focus. Young flew two Gemini, two Apollo and two shuttle missions and considered the first shuttle flight the most unsafe. Nasa later rebuked him for the stunt. He later served as Special Assistant to the Director of Johnson Space Center for Engineering, Operations, and Safety.

He flew twice during the two-man Gemini missions of the mid-1960s, twice to the moon during NASA's Apollo program, and twice more aboard the new space shuttle Columbia in the early 1980s.

Former President George H.W. Bush (41) released a statement Saturday expressing his condolences on the passing of astronaut and fellow Texan, John Young.

Retired Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield echoed that on Twitter, saying "John Young is one of my heroes, an astronaut's astronaut, a fearless individual and a good friend".
