Malaysia Confirms New Phase of MH370 Flight Search

Malaysia's government said Saturday it had approved a bid to resume the search.

Malaysia has agreed to allow a US firm to resume the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 that disappeared in March 2014.

Amateur wreck hunter Blaine Gibson claims he has found nearly 20 pieces of debris on the western side of the Indian Ocean from the Boeing 777 that vanished with 239 people aboard three years ago.

The plane vanished over the southern Indian Ocean on 8 March 2014 in one of the biggest mysteries in modern aviation.

That's a tall order, and not only because previous searches - including the 1,046-day effort conducted by the Malaysian, Chinese and Australian governments immediately after the disappearance - have been fruitless.

Ocean Infinity said it was moving Seabed Constructor, the vessel that the company uses for the search, towards the vicinity of the possible search zone given that the weather window would be relatively narrow.

To date nothing larger than an outboard wing flap has been discovered among debris identified as coming from the missing aircraft. A fresh analysis of the final moments of doomed Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, released by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2016, suggests no one was controlling the plane when it plane plunged into the ocean.

It means that payment will be made only if the company finds the wreckage.

An official with Malaysia's government emphasized he doesn't want to give "too much hope" to the families of those lost. Research vessel Seabed Constructor, leased by exploration firm Ocean Infinity, has set off from South Africa for the Indian Ocean with the aim of arriving in the search zone by mid-January, a source familiar with the matter said.
