Stalin spoke to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy over the telephone and expressed concern over the ongoing transport strike, urging the government to expedite talks with the unions. The trade unions, however, stood their ground, turning defensive while the government jumped got into firefighting mode, roping in temporary drivers and conductors to tide over the crisis.

Chennai: The strike by transport workers which began last evening, continued for the second day leaving many commuters including office-goers and students stranded in the city and other parts of Tamilnadu.

Government sources said efforts were on to ply buses.

Chennai: Hours after the Madras High Court said they should call of their two-day old strike, which has caused hardship to public, transport corporation unions said on Friday their agitation would continue till their demands on wage revision were met by the Tamil Nadu government. Despite financial constraints of transport corporations a wage revision providing for 2.44 times increase in basic pay and once in three years revision was signed on Thursday.

After the Madras High Court order on Friday, the state government asked them to return to work or face consequences.

He also warned that strict action will be taken against private buses who charge extra amount from passengers.

Stating that the High Court order to call off the strike goes against natural justice, the unions blamed the government for the inconvenience caused to the commuters.

The unions, including DMK-affiliated LPF and CITU, rejected the state government's ultimatum to return to work or face "consequences" and also claimed they had not received the court order.
