Lalu Prasad Yadav Gets 3.5 Years Jail Term

A special CBI court in Ranchi on Saturday sentenced Lalu Prasad and 7 others, namely Phool Chand, Mahesh Prasad, Bake Julious, Sunil Kumar, Sushil Kumar, Sudhir Kumar and Raja Ram, to 3.5 years imprisonment and Rs5 lakh fine each in the second fodder scam case.

The Ranchi Special CBI Court sentenced former Bihar CM Lalu Prasad Yadav to 3.5 years in jail and imposed Rs 5 lakh fine in fodder scam case.

Meanwhile, Lalu's son and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said that the trial court's decision will be challenged in the high court.

Lalu Yadav faces trial in three more cases relating to the fodder scam, locally called the "chara ghotala". After being in jail for two months, he got bail from the Supreme Court.

Yadav, 69, is a former railways minister and ex-chief minister of the impoverished eastern state of Bihar where he enjoys huge popular support for championing lower castes.

Malaysia Confirms New Phase of MH370 Flight Search
To date nothing larger than an outboard wing flap has been discovered among debris identified as coming from the missing aircraft. Malaysia has agreed to allow a US firm to resume the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 that disappeared in March 2014.

Lalu was found guilty in another fodder scam case in 2013 after which he had to resign from his Lok Sabha seat.

Earlier today, while hearing the case, the judge said that 'an open jail is best for these people (convicts), as they also have experience of cow farming.

Last month the anti-corruption court found Yadav guilty of fraudulently withdrawing almost $140,000 from the state treasury in a larger fraud dubbed the "fodder scam", which was worth about 10 billion rupees ($157 million).

On Friday, citing illness and old age, Lalu had sought leniency from the court. He was sent to Birsa Munda Jail in Ranchi. Lalu Prasad was convicted for fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 89 lakh from the Deoghar treasury during 1991-94. "It will now be hard to keep the RJD together and people in politics will be fearful", he said, when asked about the significance of the court's verdict. "He was chosen (by the people of Bihar in an election) and he's in jail", said the former Deputy Chief Minister in the Grand Alliance government.
