Paul Bauer, Chicago Police Commander Killed In Duty, Mourned By Officers, Activists

Paul Bauer multiple times in the head.

On Tuesday, 53-year-old Commander Paul Bauer was fatally shot, while trying to apprehend a male suspect in downtown Chicago. Legghette has also been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, armed violence and possession of narcotics.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel was visibly emotional while discussing Bauer's wife, Erin, and daughter, Grace, saying, "Erin and Grace, we love you, the Bauer family, the family of CPD, 2.8 million Chicagoans, we are holding you in our hearts". Cmdr. Bauer was killed after a foot chase Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018 in downtown Chicago.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson (front) prepares to speak to the press outside Northwestern Memorial Hospital following the shooting death of Cmdr.

The department said Wednesday that Bauer was on duty at the time of the shooting, correcting earlier reports.

Hours later, a procession was organized, where Bauer's fellow officers marched with blue lights as the body was brought to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

South Africa: ANC to decide on fate of Jacob Zuma
Party treasurer-general Paul Mashatile said South Africans could not be expected to wait any longer for Zuma to resign. He was scheduled to stand down next year after serving the maximum two terms after coming to power in 2009.

Officers recovered a gun from the man, who was wearing a protective vest, according to a source. Charlie Branda, the founder of Art on Sedgwick School in Chicago, who knew Bauer from one of his meetings, said it was hard to believe that the commander was no more. "This is how I look at it, I want them off the street", he told residents.

Bauer was a 31-year member of the force.

Police said surveillance video captured a struggle between the two inside the stairwell with the suspect pulling Bauer down the stairs.

Bauer had recently criticized Chicago's justice system for what he saw as excessive lenience in prosecuting and jailing career criminals.

"It's a hard day for us", Johnson told a news conference, fighting back tears. Witnesses told the Chicago Tribune that they heard gunshots, saw people running, and saw a man being taken into custody. "Commander Bauer's intuition and understanding of the complexities of policing, combined with his open and honest approach in reporting on the issues faced in the district, helped better combat the challenges faced on the streets". These are all crimes against the community. "Maybe I'm jaded, I don't think that's anything to be proud of", he said.

"It is a hard day for us, but we will get through it", Johnson said outside the hospital where Bauer was taken.
