Woman's Body Parts Found Across Japan, American Arrested

A woman's torso and "a pair of soil-covered arms" were found in Shimamoto while legs were found in Yamashina.

According to a previous report, the missing woman has been out of contact since she left her office on February 15.

The local media identified the woman as a 27-year-old company employee from Sanda city, in neighbouring Hyogo prefecture.

She and Bayraktar were last spotted together on security footage that night at the JR Morinomiya Station in Osaka around midnight, just hours before she went missing.

A large amount of air-freshener had been used in the condo and part of the woman's driving licence was found there also, sources said.

The student uprisings follow the February 14 shooting that killed 17 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Comments on social media criticized the superintendent for stifling students' freedom of speech.

Media reports said that last week police arrested Yevgeniy Vasilievich Bayraktar, 26, from NY, on suspicion of keeping the missing Japanese woman captive at his home in Osaka.

Bayraktar is believed to have rented several residences, including the one in Nishinari, on a short-term basis. The Asahi Shimbun reports that another American traveler who booked lodging in the same building because of its low cost "expressed bafflement" upon learning of the severed head. Another CCTV recording shows her entering the building where Bayraktar had rented a unit on Feb 16; there is no footage of her leaving.

Police said they have surveillance footage taken from a train station by the suspect's vacation apartment on February 16 that shows the woman and the suspect walking together, according to the Tokyo Reporter. That same day, police apprehended the suspect in Nara Prefecture on suspicion of confining the woman in the Higashinari residence.

Before the discovery of the head, the suspect was being questioned on accusations he may have locked the woman in an apartment - again, accusations he denies.

Sources told the Japan Times that other women had been seen with Bayraktar at the same apartment but were all confirmed alive and safe.
