Justice Department is reviewing California mayor's tipoff on immigration raid

Fox News notes that ICE officials are asking the Department of Justice to look into whether she broke any laws by doing so.

ICE went ahead with its wide-sweeping raids in the Bay area over the weekend (called "Operation Keep Safe") and arrested more than 150 illegal aliens in the first three days of the operation. "And that's now under review by the Department of Justice, and I don't have anything else to add". In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for the Justice Department said it "does not confirm or deny the existence or nonexistence of investigations".

Schaaf, a first-term mayor elected in 2015, has been a vocal champion of Oakland's so-called sanctuary policies since coming into office.

"Sanctuary jurisdictions like San Francisco and Oakland shield unsafe criminal aliens from federal law enforcement at the expense of public safety", Homan said in a statement. Homan also suggested that the mayor could be to blame for "public safety threats" who "remain at large" after the crackdown.

The arrests came despite a press release tweeted by Libby Schaaf, the Democratic mayor of Oakland, which noted that "multiple credible sources" told her ICE would be conducting the raids in the Bay Area. Additionally, a person from Mexico who also was previously deported and convicted of battery on a spouse and burglary was arrested.

Defenders of sanctuary city practices say they improve public safety by promoting trust among law enforcement and immigrant communities and reserving scarce police resources for other, more urgent crime-fighting needs. Among that group, 115 people had prior felonies or had significant or multiple misdemeanors.

Biathalon team said Saturday they would boycott next month's World Cup Final in Russian Federation as an anti-doping message. And they're doing so in an arena filled with fans hoisting Russian flags.

Schaaf said in a statement Tuesday night that her earlier warning "was meant to give all residents time to learn their rights and know their legal options".

Oakland, like many other California municipalities, considers itself a 'Sanctuary City, ' often shielding illegal immigrants and undocumented workers from federal authorities and border patrol agents. "We believe our community is safer when families stay together", she stated. Despite the severe challenges that this law creates for ICE, we remain committed to our public safety mission and we will continue to do our sworn duty to seek out unsafe criminal aliens and other immigration violators.

The four-day raid was the second in California since a statewide sanctuary law took effect in January.

Hundreds of immigration activists and their allies turned out in downtown SF on February 28 to protest Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, operations in Northern California.

At least two people in Fresno County were arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents this week in a massive operation that swept over Northern California.
