'A Fantastic Woman' beats out 'Loveless' in fight for Oscar

"Loveless" and "A Fantastic Woman" competed for the award with Hungary's "Testrol es Lelekrol, ' Lebanon's "L'insulte" and "Sweden's" "The Square" by Ruben Ostlund that received the Cannes Film Festival main prize past year".

In an interview with W Magazine just before the awards show, as her style team worked on her hair and makeup, Vega said she felt "ready."

Once Daniela Vega graced the 90th Academy Awards stage to introduce one of the nominees for Best Original Song, she also made a bit of history.

"I hope this award, this film, and the awareness it has created, the amplifier that this means, helps to give more relevance to a matter that is urgent, because again, a transgender person is not a class B person".

"I moved from being a man to a woman and I'm glad I did it". Director of "A Fantastic Woman" Sebastian Lelio who won the award lauded the transgender star Daniela Vega for her critically-acclaimed performance in the movie.

A favorite to win, the film has been hailed as a milestone in representing transgender characters and for taking on the timely subject of transgender identity with compassion and sensitivity. "The opera was hard and it felt like a personal conquest", she told W magazine in 2017. As soon as she loses the protection afforded by her relationship, the world rushes in to attack.

She went to an all-boys school. But her life is thrown into turmoil when he suddenly dies. "I faced a certain amount of violence". "It could have made me step backwards with my self-discovery". These moments both highlight and give respite from the trials she faces every day.

Vega said she's encountered her share of discrimination in Chile. In fact, in her debut role that was the main thing she wanted to stress. "But I respect those people who are activists, who are committed to changing the world and to having an impact from a legislative standpoint when it comes to the LGBT community", she told The Hollywood Reporter. Soon to be remade with Julianne Moore in the starring role, that was about a middle-aged cis woman on the dating scene, but the director's empathy for the indignities of female solitude remains very much his strong suit.
