FIFA To Sanction VARs For W'Cup, March 16

The International Football Association Board, IFAB, on Saturday took its decision on the use of Video Assistant Referee, VAR, in the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

The VAR - which its chief architect, the former Premier League referee David Elleray told Telegraph Sport would represent "probably the most significant single change there has been" to the way football was played at the highest level, followed two years of global trials plagued by controversy.

As far as the World Cup is concerned, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said a concrete decision will be taken at a meeting of the FIFA Council on 16 March.

Following the meeting, FIFA President Gianni Infantino told reporters: "The decision on the World Cup in Russian Federation on VAR will be taken at the next Council meeting in Colombia on 16 March".

"What is more important for us is that we can help the referee to take the right decision, we bring fairness to the game".

And the Argentine believes work needs to be done to improve the VAR system before it can be used on a full-time basis in the Premier League.

Now, it has received the thumbs up from the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which stated the technology was "an historic step for greater fairness in football". At times, the decisions made by the referee have proven to be game changers and are bemoaned by the managers and players.

Video assistant referee is an assistant that reviews decisions made by the officials to ensure accuracy by confirming decisions or overturning potential decisions.

It has been claimed VAR - which can only be used to determine whether there is a goal or not, a penalty or no penalty, straight red cards or incidents of mistaken identity - causes confusion among fans and players.

When goal-line technology was first introduced at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil, it was happy days for football.

Tottenham had a routine Erik Lamela goal disallowed when an official watching on the video screen flagged up to match referee Paul Tierney a tiny shirt-pull by Fernando Llorente in the build-up.

Talking about that particular decision, Jose Mourinho said that VAR went against the original protocol.

That is an issue confronting major North American sports like baseball and American football, where different forms of video replay have been in use for several years and where calls to shorten match length have risen.

It is thought clubs only agree on some of the reasons to review game-changing incidents.

27 January - In West Brom's victory at Liverpool, the referee and VAR consulted to rule out a goal for Albion's Craig Dawson for offside, and a penalty was awarded to Liverpool - which they missed - after the referee consulted the pitchside TV monitor.

Infantino brushed aside concerns over the readiness of World Cup referees or concerns that the VAR system was taking the spontaneity and excitement out of the sport.

"I can guarantee the referees that will be at the World Cup will be ready", he said on Saturday.
