Kushner meets with Mexican officials to fix damaged ties with US

Kushner, who began working in the White House when Trump took office previous year, has been charged with overseeing a broad portfolio of responsibilities ranging from trade issues with Mexico to brokering a peace deal between the Israelis and Palestinians. Videgaray was scheduled to accompany the Mexican head of state on that trip.

Trump's son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner was caught up in the scandal as he, like Porter, had been operating under an interim security clearance.

Trump repeatedly declared both on the campaign trail and from the White House that Mexico would pay for a wall on the U.S. border to stop illegal immigration. Trump described the announcement as an incentive for a favorable renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), CNBC reported. It was the second time Pena Nieto had called off a Washington visit because of disagreements with Trump.

Mexican officials declined to comment on whether Trump and Pena Nieto will hold court in the future. A senior administration official said Kushner was meeting with Pena Nieto and Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray to explore ways to expand cooperation on issues such as security, immigration and trade.

The allegations of the use of chemical weapons are a "mere blackmail" that the West resorted to strike the Syrian army, he noted. The Syrian government, through the SANA state news agency, denied using chemical weapons in its eastern Ghouta offensive.

Videgaray lost his job as finance minister over the trip's fallout, but was later appointed foreign minister after Trump's surprise win in the USA presidential election.

The envoy's visit came after a testy telephone conversation between Peña Nieto and United States President Donald Trump and was widely seen as a move created to smooth over strained bilateral relations.

Videgaray has maintained close ties with Kushner ever since, including several visits to the White House, most recently an unsuccessful effort to try to broker a Trump-Pena Nieto meeting.
