France's far-right party now 'adult' and needs name change: Le Pen

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen is set to propose a name change for the National Front, part of a makeover created to make the anti-immigration party relevant again after she was defeated by Emmanuel Macron in the presidential race.

But Bannon might have threatened Le Pen's makeover with his compliments for an extreme version of the National Front and lavish praise for Le Pen's more hard-line niece and rival.

"You're part of a worldwide movement bigger than France, bigger than Italy", Bannon told the gathering, denouncing central banks, central governments and "crony capitalists".

Last week, Bannon appeared in Rome to observe the elections and advocated for an alliance between the anti-immigrant League party and the populist Five Star Movement in Italy.

Steve Bannon, a right-wing firebrand and former member of US President Donald Trump's inner circle, voiced solidarity for France's a National Front (FN) party conference in Lille on Saturday.

Despite being ousted from his White House post previous year and feuding with Trump in recent months, Bannon praised the president's "economic nationalism" that he said "does not care about your race, your religion, your ethnicity".

In the meantime, she emphasized that the political views of the National Front would not change; it will stand for "the defense of identity, French culture, security, the fight against immigration, and the defense of a social model, of national solidarity and especially of national sovereignty".

There will be no further comment at this time". "When I took over we were in the bottom three. The players know we did well today for long periods.

Bannon said he agreed with Le Pen's expressed belief that "it is not about left versus right". The new name, to be announced tomorrow, is meant to distance the party from the toxic aura that it earned under her father, who handed her the leadership in 2011.

National Front leader Marine Le Pen is working to unite her divided party and bolster her ability to lead it as the party meets for the first time since she lost resoundingly to Emmanuel Macron in the final round of the French presidential election last May.

Ten months ago, the party was on a high after Le Pen saw off the Socialist candidate to take the FN into the second round of the presidential election with unprecedented support, though not enough to defeat Macron. Jean-Marie Le Pen also is to be scratched from the party's books along with his title of honorary president-for-life, formally closing, if not ending, a bitter father-daughter feud.

Since taking over the National Front's presidency in 2011, Le Pen has worked to erase the footprint of her father - who has convictions for racism and anti-Semitism - to broaden the party's appeal. She bowed out of politics after her aunt's presidential defeat, but is expected to come back in a new role.

At home, she is banking on divisions between pro-Macron centrists and rightwingers tearing his party apart, making the FN France's biggest party of the right.

Recent polling showed that 55% of respondents don't want Le Pen to run in the next election.
