India grounds 11 Indigo, GoAir jets after P&W engine shutdowns

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Monday grounded 11 Airbus aircraft of the 320 neo family - ones that run with a particular series of engines manufactured by aerospace company Pratt & Whitney - after a number of episodes of mid-air engine failure.

In India, IndiGo operates about 1,000 flights daily.

The Airbus A320 Neo plane had 186 passengers on board.

In Its order, the DGCA had said, "In view of few occurances of aborted take-off and in-flight Shut Down (IFSD) happening on A320neo fleet worldwide fitted with PW1100 engines (from Sl No. 450 and beyond). Both IndiGo and GoAir have been told not to refit these engines, which are spare with them in their inventory", the DGCA said in a release.

Three IndiGo planes were already on the ground following similar engine problems since February.

The company's massive interest payments also sucked up resources that could have gone toward technology and improving operations. Initially, the Toys "R" Us at the Summit in Birmingham was on the closure list, but the company said later it would remain open.

Hundreds of passengers have reportedly been stranded at various airports, after civil aviation regulator, DGCA grounded 11 A-320 neo aircraft, Monday, March 12. That's not acceptable, according to the Indian regulator, which said the manufacturer had "no concrete proposal in place at this stage". Indigo's boroscopic tests (which are used to test defects or imperfections in aircraft engines and gas turbines) detected these anomalies in 69 instances, Business Today reported. It and GoAir said they'd complied with the DGCA directive. "We are working to mitigate the Aircraft on Ground (AOG) situation by the end of the second quarter", it added. The aircraft "experienced [a] technical glitch with its Number 2 engine", says the carrier.

"All affected passengers have been given the option to either choose another flight at no additional cost or cancel their booking and get a full refund without any cancellation charges".

There are around 45 A320 neos, powered by P&W engines, in the country.
