New manufacturing jobs spur IL to new peak levels of employment

State officials announced Monday that the state's unemployment rate for January was 3.9 percent. Charleston County boasts the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 4.0 percent.

Monroe County's unemployment rate rose, Pike County's rate fell, and leisure and hospitality continue to lead the field in employment gains in January.

Alabama's unemployment rate is three-tenths of a percent better than the USA jobless rate of 4.1 percent. There were no big winners other than construction, with a 1 percent gain (28,600) jobs.

That's the lowest the unemployment rate has been in January since the year 2000, according to historical data maintained by the INDWD. Year-to-year, all the January 2018 figures are lower than the January 2017 numbers. During all of 2017, weekly earnings averaged a 3.6 percent increase over the prior year, compared to a 1.9 percent increase in 2016.

For 70 years, an unemployment rate of 5 percent has been considered the point at which everyone who wants a job has one, employers have the skilled workers they need and there is limited inflationary pressure on wages.
