Afriforum says Momberg's sentence shows double standards on racism

A Wichita man has been sentenced to over four years in prison for assaulting another man during a fraudulent Craisglist transaction last summer.

The court on Wednesday sentenced her to three years in jail‚ one of which was suspended for three years on condition that she is not convicted of the same offence.

The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) welcomes the court's verdict and sentencing of Vicki Momberg by the Randburg Magistrate court.

She said she viewed Momberg's actions as intentional as the police officer was merely doing his job when she verbally abused him. Her tirade was caught on camera and the video soon went viral.

Momberg stood unmoved in the dock and repeatedly wiped her tears when Magistrate Pravina Rugoonandan read her judgment.

However, deputy public prosecutor Muhamad Iskandar Ahmad pressed for a deterrent sentence, stating that the case involved the public interest.

"The SAHRC can not predict how people will react - however, it is worth noting that the criminal court has made a definitive judgment on the seriousness of infringing on the right to human dignity and crimen injuria in the context of our constitutional democracy", Smith added.

She later said it was apparent that, based on letters provided to the court by various family members, there is still an inability to unite and find common ground even after Eric Krafft's death.

The court has ruled that Momberg stays behind bars until next week's application for leave to appeal.
