Blue Moon Rising This Easter Weekend Will Be The Last Until 2020

The first full moon this month was on March 2.

After a January with two full moons and a February without any full moon, March will see its second full moon - a blue moon - tonight, Saturday, March 31. The name is simply used to distinct the full moon as the second to appear within a calendar month. In some years, Paschal moon is usually designated as Easter Sunday and 2018 is one of those years.

The moon appears in the first supermoon of 2018 as seen from suburban Makati city east of Manila, Philippines on Monday, Jan. 1, 2018.

The previous double blue moon took place in 1999; the next will be in 2037, Travel and Leisure reports.

Today's full moon, which is the first full moon of spring, is also known as a "Paschal Moon", which is the full moon right before Easter Sunday. The name originates from that in March, sap begin to stream from sugar maple trees, inning accordance with The Old Farmer's Almanac.
