Call to rename Women's Day after Winnie Madikizela-Mandela

South African anti-apartheid campaigner Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has died aged 81, her personal assistant says.

Family spokesman Victor Dlamini said Mrs Mandela "succumbed peacefully in the early hours of Monday afternoon surrounded by her family and loved ones" following a long illness, which had seen her go in and out of hospital since the start of the year.

Zelda la Grange, the former private secretary to Nelson Mandela, also sent her honest condolences. Her sacrifices, the courage of her conviction and for keeping the hopes and spirit of Nelson Mandela and others alive during the struggle will always be remembered and appreciated. "In the face of exploitation, she was a champion of justice and equality", he said in a televised address, adding that she "was an abiding symbol of the desire of our people to be free".

George Bizos, a human rights lawyer who represented Nelson Mandela at the 1960s trial that led to his long imprisonment, recalled how the marriage broke down.

"Nobody knows him better than I do", she told a British interviewer in 2013.

When Madikizela-Mandela returned to her home in Soweto in 1985, breaking her banning orders, it was as a far more bellicose figure, determined to assume leadership of what became the decisive and most violent phase of the struggle.

She was expelled from her husband's cabinet a year later. In 1994, when her then-husband became President, she was elected to parliament and became deputy arts and science minister in the country's first multi-racial government.

President Cyril Ramaphosa led an outpouring of grief over her death in South Africa.

She was a trained social worker when she met her former late husband, Nelson.

Ms Madikizela-Mandela complained bitterly on a North American tour after she was forced to testify to South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1997 that the commission never asked her about the treatment she suffered over 18 months in solitary confinement. "Whenever there was anything she would be there like a real neighbour and a mother", Makgalemele said.

So she stands on very unique ground here in South Africa.

In May 1991 she was sentenced to six years in prison for kidnapping in relation to the incident, but the sentence was later reduced to a fine.

She remained steadfast and unbowed throughout, emerging to punch the air triumphantly in the clenched-fist salute of black power as she walked hand-in-hand with Mandela out of Cape Town's Victor Vester prison on February 11, 1990. I recall an interview I watched wherein Winnie spoke of how it was lonely at times to have to raise her fist in the air and shout amandla by herself.

"Rest in peace Mama Winnie". You lived a full and important life contributing to the liberation of a nation by force and ACTUAL ACTIVISM.

Holomisa said he had worked closely with Madikizela-Mandela in the 1980s.

"Today we have lost a mother, a grandmother, a friend, a comrade, a leader and an icon", said Ramaphosa, who was expected to visit the family home later on Monday.
