Police Find Body Of Missing CDC Doctor In A River

Authorities said Thursday that a cluster of new HIV infections has occurred largely among the homeless and people who inject drugs.

The remains of Timothy Cunningham were discovered Tuesday in the Chattahoochee River in northwest Atlanta, police spokesman Carlos Campos said.

Cunningham's parents were notified by police about four bodies found as part of the search, only to be told later that none of them was of their son.

On the morning he went missing, his supervisor at the CDC talked to him about why he had been passed over for a promotion, police said.

Assuming no new information is brought to investigators, O'Connor said, the case will likely be closed "fairly soon".

In the days after he went missing, Cunningham's case drew intense media scrutiny and speculation about what had happened in what police called "unusual" circumstances.

Police said they "knew he was a collector of crystals".

Another loophole is a 1997 court decision that requires undocumented immigrant children to be released to their parents. Such proposals are likely to face opposition from moderate Republicans and Democrats going into the midterm elections.

The infections in Lowell and Lawrence have occurred largely among the homeless and people who inject drugs, authorities said Thursday. He noted the body was found in an area that authorities had already searched in February without finding anything.

Atlanta Police Maj. Michael O'Connor said that Cunningham had shared some "concerns at work" as well as "some personal issues" with family the day before he disappeared. The manner of death has not yet been determined, but officials say there were no signs of foul play.

Cunningham's work at the CDC fueled speculation and conspiracy theories about his disappearance, including one dubious story on a website that said Cunningham disappeared amid warnings that his patients were dying from botched flu vaccines.

"I feel like I'm in a awful "Black Mirror" episode", she told The Times.

"Tim's impact will be felt not only through his significant contributions to CDC's mission, but also through his influence on the lives of his colleagues and friends", the statement said.

"He has this pristine service record and background", Cunningham's friend David Calloway told NBC News. He held a master's degree and a doctorate from Harvard's School of Public Health. His research has been oriented towards understanding health differences related to race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, and geography. The agency said he was an excellent officer and employee who had received an early promotion to commander last July.

Preliminary findings show the CDC worker who went missing almost two months ago may have drowned, the Fulton County medical examiner said Thursday.
