Baby born four years after Chinese parents' death in road crash

A BABY has been born in China to a surrogate mother, four years after the parents were killed in a vehicle crash, Chinese media reported Monday.

As surrogacy remains illegal in China, the parents had to seek expert medical help overseas and eventually hired a 27-year-old surrogate mother from Laos to deliver the child. Days before doctors were set to transfer one of the embryos into Liu, the couple died in a auto crash in Jiangsu.

The mother and father of those deceased bunch repeatedly visited with the hospital in Nanjing at which the frozen embryos have been stored, but senior hospital officials repeatedly denied to meet with them.

Once this challenge was met, the families had to set about finding a surrogate and, with this service illegal in China, they had to set their sights overseas.

After the fatal accident, their parents fought the government for the rights to the four frozen embryos left behind - in an unprecedented legal case.

"He's always smiling. His eyes are like my daughter, but he looks more like her dad overall", Hu Xingxian, the mother of Liu Xi, was quoted as saying.

The thermos-sized bottle of liquid nitrogen containing the embryos had to be transported by vehicle as no aircraft was willing to transport it.

Getting the citizenship of the child, named Tiantian, proved to be another hurdle as he was born in China and not Laos, with the surrogate travelling there on a simple tourist visa.

They then hired a surrogate mother, from Laos in south-east Asia, to deliver the child.

They nicknamed him "Tiantian" (or "little sweet"), for the joy he brought after years of bitter legal battles and crushing loss.

They also revealed that they will tell their grandson about his parents deaths when he is older.

The baby's paternal and maternal grandparents have reportedly proven relations through DNA.

"We will definitely tell him in the future - how can we not?"
