Coli outbreak in 7 states

Romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Arizona, region, near the southern border of California, may have caused a recent outbreak of Escherichia coli, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced.

35 people infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7 have been reported from the 11 states. Twenty-two people have been hospitalized, including three who have developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Illnesses include nine cases in Pennsylvania, eight cases in Idaho, seven cases in New Jersey, two cases each in Connecticut, New York and OH, and one case each in Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Virginia and Washington.

Nationwide, at least 6 of the victims were hospitalized with severe E. coli infections between March 22 and March 31, 2018.

No common grower, supplier, or distributor has been identified yet.

The CDC confirmed the outbreak this week, but said the source of the bacterial infection is still unclear. Ill people range in age from 12 to 84 years, with a median age of 41.

Red Sox and Yankees ready to resume their longtime rivalry
This was the first series for the Yankees with two games going at least 12 innings since 2001 at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. Bettors are able to gamble on the game's total with odds sitting at even money (+100) for over 7.5 runs and -120 for under 7.5.

The chopped romaine lettuce outbreak is not related to the E. coli O157: H7 outbreak involving leafy greens that began in late 2017 and was officially closed out on January 25, 2018.

It can be tough for public health officials to track the source of an E. coli outbreak to one specific ingredient, but they tend to start to see patterns when they interview sick people, asking about where they ate and when.

Restaurants and retailers should not serve or sell any chopped romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region. People who develop symptoms should seek medical care and contact their local health department to report the illness.

A case of E.coli has been linked to 35 cases of sickness reported in several states, including two in CT. The restaurants reported using bagged, chopped romaine lettuce. Traceback investigations are ongoing to find the source of that product and preliminary findings are pointing to the Yuma growing area.

Symptoms of E. coli infection include diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, and vomiting.
