China's ZTE a national security risk, United Kingdom telcos warned

This ban was put in place after ZTE broke an agreement with the USA government that was reached after it illegally shipped U.S. technology to Iran and North Korea. "Instead of reprimanding ZTE staff and senior management, ZTE rewarded them".

An original export ban on ZTE was lifted in March 2017, after the company paid an $892 million fine for breaching sanctions on Iran, but the US Commerce Department now claims ZTE has issued misleading and false statements about making improvements to its business.

According to reports, part of the deal ZTE had made with the USA government was that it would not give bonuses to employees who had acted illegally in the past, but it failed to follow through on that promise. (NYSE: T). According to a report from Reuters at the time, security concerns were raised during the negotiations between Huawei and AT&T.

A senior official with the U.S. Commerce Department Bureau of Industry and Security told reporters that the ZTE decision was unrelated to the administration's threats to impose tariffs on Chinese imports, saying the actions against the Chinese company are part of an investigation.

ZTE got fined for its actions and was told to terminate the employment of 4 senior executives and discipline 35 others or risk getting cut off from its USA suppliers.

Following the announcements ZTE has suspended trading in the company's shares.

France Mulls Military Action Against Syria For Gas Attacks
France is already involved in the US -led coalition created in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq. Her office said that May had talked with US President Donald Trump by telephone on Thursday evening to discuss Syria.

The FT's report notes that Levy's letter also cites a recent settlement between ZTE and U.S. officials, in which the Chinese firm agreed to pay a $1.2bn fines for violating United States sanctions on North Korea and Iran. "This egregious behavior can not be ignored", claimed US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross in unveiling the tough sanctions against ZTE yesterday.

The NCSC said it would be "impossible" to manage risks to the telecommunications sector if ZTE equipment was deployed at scale and that using ZTE equipment and services would have a "long term negative effect" on the security of the UK. Its products, including smartphones, use such American parts as microprocessors from Qualcomm, glass made by Corning, and sound technology from Dolby.

The ban on supplying ZTE comes two months after two Republican senators introduced legislation to block the USA government from buying or leasing telecommunications equipment from ZTE or Huawei, citing concern the companies would use their access to spy on US officials. ZTE was a regular purchaser from Qualcomm Inc., Intel Corp., Acacia Communications and lumentum Holdings Inc.

For ZTE itself, the latest USA action means one of the world's top makers of smartphones and communications gear will no longer be able to buy technology from American suppliers, including components central to its products.

Shares of Finisar Corp. Oclaro generates about between 10% and 15% of revenue from both Huawei and ZTE and gets another 10% from Nokia.

ZTE has sold handset devices to USA mobile carriers AT&T Inc, T-Mobile US Inc and Sprint Corp.
