Cancellation Watch: Fear the Walking Dead Returns Strong for its Fourth Season

And some beloved characters from The Walking Dead showed up at the beginning of the episode to say goodbye to Morgan.

Despite the fact the numbers are less than ideal for the show, it was nevertheless the highest-rated program of the night.

While the 70-minute capper eclipsed everything else on the tube Sunday night-TNT's live coverage of the Houston Rockets' 104-101 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in the National Basketball Association playoffs was a distant second with a 1.9 rating-the audience deliveries didn't measure up to previous "Walking Dead" finales.

Season 1 premiered on Halloween, but seasons 2-6 premiered in the second week of October before pushing it back a week into October for seasons 7-8.

Sunday's episode scored 7.9 million live viewers, which is still quite a big number for a basic cable show.

Fear the Walking Dead got a nice bump in viewership thanks to its cast shakeup, but TWD's "Wrath" only had 7.9m viewers, which, though nothing to sneeze at, is more than a 30 percent decrease from Season 7's finale. Over on FOX, The Last Man on Earth slipped to a 0.6 rating with 1.4 million total viewers while NBC's Timeless slipped to a 0.5 rating with 2.5 million total viewers.

But look, the zombie show's been renewed for next season already and its story arc isn't expected to be wrapped up in a year or even two, so TWD is very safe - especially as far as TV shows go. Debuting directly after the TWD Season 8 finale and facing the mega-hyped 20/20 sitdown with former Federal Bureau of Investigation boss James Comey on ABC, the Kim Dickens led Fear brought in 4.1 million viewers.

We'll have more on the premiere episode soon, but for now, we want to quickly dispose of a popular fan theory that has gained some steam in the last few months: That Madison Clark is Alpha, a member of The Whisperers from Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead graphic novels.
