Canelo Alvarez Suspended 6 Months for Positive PED Test Before GGG Fight

Canelo Alvarez, who withdrew from his May 5 pay-per-view rematch with unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin following a pair of failed drug tests, was suspended for six months on Wednesday during a Nevada Athletic Commission hearing in Las Vegas.

The Mexican middleweight had been due to face Golovkin but his place has already been filled by Vanes Martirosyan.

In a settlement agreement between Alvarez and the state, the boxer "admits that the presence of clenbuterol in his urinalyses samples constitutes a violation of the commission's anti-doping regulations, regardless of whether or not he intentionally, knowingly, or negligently ingested the prohibited substance". Alvarez claims the positive tests are a result of eating contaminated beef, which has been a problem for athletes in Mexico.

The suspension should come with a "save-the-date" note because it means that Alvarez will be eligible to fight again after August 17, six months after the date of his first positive test.

Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs), the crowd-pleasing Kazakh knockout artist, had originally been slated to fight Canelo Álvarez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in a rematch of their September blockbuster, which ended in a controversial split draw.

Gennady Golovkin's plans for Cinco de Mayo weekend are finally set, even if it's not the against the opponent or in the city he wanted.

"Of course, like everybody said, he's huge Mexican star", Golovkin told reporters in Los Angeles last week. "He is ready to continue his remarkable record of fighting at the highest level". But he said Golovkin must focus first on his upcoming fight.

Things didn't go as planned for Spike, though, and with him left opponentless, many had wondered whether Triple G would still make the walk to the ring on May 5. "I will always be a clean fighter".
