Trump to Give Posthumous Pardon to Champion Boxer Jack Johnson

And Trump has confirmed he is considering the movie star's request to make Johnson his third pardon since he took office in 2017.

Trump, spurred by a phone call from Sylvester Stallone, tweeted Saturday that he's thinking about posthumously pardoning the trailblazing fighter.

Trump explained that Stallone told him about Johnson and had called him, and he's now taking into consideration a posthumous pardon.

"[Johnson's] trials and tribulations were great", Trump added, "his life complex and controversial".

Johnson, a former heavyweight champion, was arrested in 1912 on suspicion of violating the Mann Act - which forbid people from transporting women across state lines for "immoral purposes". John McCain - petitioned President Barack Obama to give Johnson a pardon on the 70th anniversary of the boxer's death.

Johnson became the heavyweight champion in 1908 after defeating Tommy Burns. Johnson died in a auto crash in 1946.

Johnson returned to the U.S.in 1920 to serve his sentence and was released almost one year later.

She stated that what they had in the house would continue outside the house. I promise to keep the flags flying and new songs coming soon, "he said".

Trump's previous pardons include Scooter Libby, former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, and former Maricopa County, Arizona, Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

His fight with James Jeffries in 1910 is widely regarded as the "Fight of the Century".

The boxer served almost a year in jail, which destroyed his career. He died in 1946.

The family "didn't talk about it because they were ashamed of him, that he went to prison", Linda E. Haywood, 61, has said of her great-great uncle. The authorities then found another white witness, Belle Schreiber, how testified against Johnson.

Presidents who have been asked to pardon Johnson in the past have opted not to do so.

Posthumous pardons are rare, but not unprecedented.

"Despite this resolution passing both chambers of Congress several times in recent years, no pardon has been issued to date", McCain said in a statement at the time. In 1999, President Bill Clinton pardoned Henry O. Flipper, the first African-American officer to graduate from West Point in 1877, after being unjustly accused of embezzlement. Bush pardoned Charles Winters in 2008, an American volunteer in the Arab-Israeli War convicted of violating the U.S. Neutrality Acts in 1949. President Donald Trump said he would consider a "full pardon" for the first black heavyweight boxing champion.
